  • Metric tap and die set is a combination of taps and dies that are used to cut internal threads in metallic materials. The threads are customarily defined by the pitch (the distance from crest to crest), the number of starts or turns per unit length, and the major diameter of the thread. The pitch is fixed by the material’s tensile strength, while the other specifications are dependent on convenience and taste.
  • Metric tap and die sets can be divided into two categories: Through hole and blind hole. A through hole tap has a pilot on its leading end. The pilot guides it into a hole which has been drilled through the workpiece by a prior operation, such as drilling or reaming. A blind hole tap lacks this feature, so it must be guided into position with a tapping wrench before cutting threads can occur.
